After all the the rain and cold weather we had experienced, we were pleased to be heading down to the south where sunshine was practically guaranteed. A twenty hour bus journey took us from Mexico City to the colourful city of Campeche. It was a delight to explore Campeche and a joy to see the ocean for the first time on this trip. And it was hot, very hot! We took walks along the promenade and enjoyed the cool breeze as we watched the pelicans diving for fish.
Our next stop was the musical city of Merida, the capital of Yucatan. Here, we discovered a great bar called La Negrita, ate at the fabulous Frida's, watched the locals dancing to a Cuban band in the plaza and wandered past the great pre-revolutionary mansions.
Valladolid was our base for exploring the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, but we soon discovered that the city had a lot to offer in its own right. We hired bikes and cycled out to the cenotes where I swam surrounded by catfish and with bats flying overhead. It was an awesome experience. A light show on the walls of San Bernardino Church was spectacular. Another highlight was visiting La Casa del Venados. In fact it was so impressive that it deserves its own blog, which I will be writing very soon!
Before crossing the border into Belize, we had to pay a visit to Tulum and see the Mayan ruins. Spectacularly situated on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and a stunning beach, it was even more impressive than I imagined.
