We made it to Mexico!

Arriving in Mexico has been the culmination of a very long journey, and I am not just referring to the three planes that delivered us here.

Two and a half years ago, we arrived in the UK after a five month trip to South East Asia and New Zealand. Although travel was our number one priority, somehow, we got stuck - we purchased a car, worked, housesat and didn't have enough money to travel.

At last, we are back in Mexico embarking on the adventure that we have been planning for so long. Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama lay ahead.

Our journey starts in Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico. Guadalajara immediately struck us as a pleasant place to wander - crumbling colonial buildings, cool sculptures, enormous plazas and a buzzing atmosphere.

We headed to Parque Morelos, where the Dios de los Muertos market was taking place. Fun and colourful, we found ourselves surrounded by candy skulls, Day of the Dead bread, skeletons, chocolate hooded monks and coffins.

At Mariachi Plaza, the birthplace of mariachi, we saw the musicians in full regalia hanging out, waiting for requests. Strangely enough, a rapper had taken over the street on the afternoon we were there.

We enjoyed the bizarre seat sculptures by Alejandro Colunga on Plaza Tapatia and we were impressed by the bohemian coffee shop, Viva Chapata. Naturally, we also had our first of many Huevos Rancheros, which went down a treat!

Guadalajara has been a good start to what will hopefully be another amazing trip. Next stop - San Miguel Allende!
